Sister Mary Louise Zollars, who ministered to poor of Baltimore, dies at 91

A funeral Mass for Daughter of Charity Sister Mary Louise Zollars was offered April 12 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg. Sister Mary Louise died April 5. She was 91.

Sister Mary Louise, a native of Newark, N.J., had a lengthy ministry in social work in the Baltimore area and also taught at St. Dominic School in Hamilton, 1952-59.

She was administrator of St. Vincent’s Center in Timonium, 1975-80, and also ministered as a social worker in Baltimore at Beans and Bread, My Brother’s Keeper Soup Kitchen and St. Agnes Hospital.

In 2015, Sister Mary Louise moved to Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg for the ministry of prayer, a post she held until her death.

She was a parishioner of St. James in Mount Rainer before entering the Daughters of Charity community in 1951.  She held education, history and social work degrees from the former St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg and New York University.

In addition to her service in Baltimore, she taught at St. Catherine Labouré School in Wheaton and did social work in New York City; Richmond, Va.; Washington, D.C.; and Raleigh, N.C.
