Redemptorist Father Knappik, an associate pastor in Annapolis and Baltimore, dies at 92

A funeral Mass was offered Feb. 21 for Redemptorist Father Richard Knappik at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Ephrata, Pa. Father Knappik, who ministered as an associate pastor in Annapolis and Baltimore, died Feb. 16, one day short of his 93rd birthday.

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Father Knappik served as assistant to the director of novices for the novitiate at St. Mary’s College in Ilchester (1960-1961) and as associate pastor of St. Mary in Annapolis (1961-1963) and St. Wenceslaus in Baltimore (1963-1966).

Father Knappik was born in Philadelphia  Feb. 17, 1932. He was baptized at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Philadelphia, where his vocation to the Redemptorists was nourished.  He professed as a Redemptorist on Aug. 2, 1953 and ordained to the priesthood on June 22, 1958.

Elsewhere, he ministered in Puerto Rico, New York and Pennsylvania. He served his later years at the St. John Neumann Residence in Timonium.

He wrote in 1953: “God showered many graces upon me, not the least of which was a desire for fraternal charity and dogged perseverance no matter how great the battle.”
