Sister Agnese Neumann dies at 95 August 6, 2025By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Feature, Local News, News, Obituaries A funeral Mass for Religious Sister of Mercy Agnese Neumann will be offered at 11 a.m. on Aug. 11 at St. Joseph in Cockeysville. Sister Agnese died Aug. 2. She was 95. Born in Baltimore, Jean Marie Neumann attended St. Bernardine School and Mount St. Agnes High School in Baltimore. After graduating from high school, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1947 in Mount Washington and received her religious name. She made her perpetual vows in 1953. Sister Agnese taught at St. Bernard School in Baltimore (1950-51) and Mercy High School in Baltimore (1960-67 and 1969-73). Sister Agnese began her nursing ministry at the University of Maryland – Baltimore in 1975. She served at the Women’s Health Clinic at St. Mary’s County Health Department (2001-07) and the Caroline Center in Baltimore (2008-10). She also assisted at Mercy High School in more recent years. In celebration of Sister Agnese’s exceptional career in healthcare, Mercy High School established the Sister Agnese Neumann Scholars Program in partnership with MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital in 2018. Through that program, Mercy students receive hands-on training in a specialized healthcare setting. Sister Agnese held a bachelor’s degree in elementary education Mount St. Agnes College in Baltimore, a master’s in biology from what is now St. Bonaventure University in New York and a nursing degree from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Elsewhere, Sister Agnese served in Pennsylvania and Georgia.
