Holy Cross Brother James Miller, Baltimore native, dies at 85

A funeral Mass for Holy Cross Brother James H. Miller will be offered June 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of Mary on the campus of Stonehill College in North Easton, Mass. Brother James died June 20 at Holy Cross House in Indiana. He was 85.

Born in Baltimore, Brother James boarded a train bound for North Easton in 1959 to enter the Congregation of Holy Cross. He made his first profession of vows in 1961 and his final vows on Aug. 16, 1964.

Brother James served as vocations director for the Holy Cross Brothers 1964-66. Other ministry included working in the business office of Camp Sebaik in Maine, and ministering with his religious community in Rome, Massachusetts and Vermont.

Brother James earned a bachelor’s degree in theater from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where he served as a counselor in residence halls, director of a residence hall and orientation director. He worked in the theater department for several years.

He completed a master’s degree in fine arts in theater in 1979 at Temple University in Philadelphia, and returned to King’s College to teach theater. In 1998, he was named director of theater arts at King’s College, a position he held until 2016.

Brother James had two deceased brothers, Monsignor Edward Miller, former pastor of St. Bernardine in Baltimore; and Christian Brother Thomas Miller, a former teacher at Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland and Calvert Hall College High School in Towson.
