Sister Dolores Hudson, OSU, served in Cumberland hometown as teacher and principal, dies at 82

Ursuline Sister of Louisville Sister Dolores (Joseph Ann) Hudson, a native of Cumberland who served her hometown as an educator, died April 2 at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville. She was 82.

One of eight children, she graduated from the former St. Mary High School in Cumberland in 1956, and entered the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville the next year. Sister Dolores earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Ursuline College in Louisville; a master’s degree in elementary education from what is now Frostburg State University; and later a second master’s degree in education administration and supervision from Frostburg State.

According to an obituary prepared by her order, she had “a special place in her heart for children.”

In Cumberland, Sister Dolores taught at SS. Peter and Paul School, 1969-77, and was principal of St. John Neumann School, 1987-97, where a new school yard was named for her as she retired from that position. Sister Dolores also was principal of St. Francis de Sales School in Morgantown, W.Va., 1977-84.

Sister Dolores also taught at St. Peter School in Columbia, S.C., and at St. Helen, St. Elizabeth and St. Vincent de Paul parish schools in Louisville. She served her Ursuline Sisters at their nursing facility, 1998-2010 and then at their Motherhouse in Louisville until 2017.

Sister Dolores is the daughter of the late Calvin R. Hudson and Margaret Wolfe Hudson. Also preceding her in death are her brothers: William, Donald, Harold, Thomas and John Hudson; and sister, Patricia Hudson Fabbri. She is survived by her sister Mary Margaret Wilhelm, brother James Hudson, both of Cumberland, and several nieces and nephews, as well as her community of Ursuline Sisters and Associates.

A funeral Mass is to be offered April 9 at the Motherhouse Chapel in Louisville.
